Governance
Kanifing is the largest urban area in The Gambia. It is situated between the Island of Kombo St Mary and West Coast Region, adjacent to the capital city Banjul. Together with Banjul and Brikama, they constitute the Greater Banjul Region. On its east is a long stretch of mangrove swamps, which extend into the West Coast Region while the northern and north-eastern boundary is marked by the Atlantic Ocean.

Kanifing is organised into five National Assembly Constituencies, each represented by a Member of Parliament. It also comprises 19 wards, each led by a Ward Councillor, and 84 sub-wards managed by Sub-ward Chairpersons. Additionally, Kanifing is divided into 16 large traditional settlements, with each settlement overseen by an Alkalo, who serves as the traditional leader.
The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) governs the municipality of Kanifing, comprising a General Council for policy development and an administrative section for implementation.
